"Emry, Lurker of the Loch" Deck Tech – "Magic: The Gathering"
Throughout the years, Magic: The Gathering has ebbed and flowed as far as being a game themed in high fantasy. Some of the sets are styled in themes similar to Ancient Greece or Egypt, one takes place in an Arthurian-inspired setting, and some are even as close to science fiction as fantasy can get.
We have been going over a lot of Commanders from Throne of Eldraine, the aforementioned Arthurian-themed set. From Linden, Steadfast Queen, all the way to Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig (with pitstops at the Questing Beast, Ayara, First of Locthwain, and Torbran, Thane of Red Fell), we at Bleeding Cool have been exhaustively going over the legendary creatures in the set to bring you quality deck techs. We even went over the Brawl commanders as well as the Buy-A-Box promo.
Which brings me to my Commander deck tech for today. Emry, Lurker of the Loch, another legendary creature from Throne of Eldraine, has synergies with some wacky cards – and I mean wacky. From a self-mill strategy to artifact-centric control builds, Emry can do a lot to make a victory occur for her pilot. Almost sort of like Urza, Lord High Artificer, a Commander who, to many, needs no introduction – but a (fortunate) few ought to know that he is currently one of the highest-tier Commanders out there right now due to his ability to make every artifact into a mana source and to almost instantaneously vomit out spells directly from the library.
It sounds crazy, no? Well, Emry is a Commander who absolutely can perform similar functions on the battlefield.
The decklist we will discuss in this article can be found here.
Our goal early-game with Emry is to try our best to get her out on Turn One, and then we will then proceed to send cards from our library into the graveyard for ease of access. If we can manage to get a combo going with any card in the graveyard, so be it.
Notable Inclusions
Mindslaver – In an absolute show of force, Mindslaver can be recurred to take control of any opponent's turn endlessly through Emry and the use of ten mana.
Urza, Lord High Artificer – With any one of the infinite mana outlets in the deck, Urza can allow us to play the entire contents of this deck at once.
Basalt Monolith, Rings of Brighthearth – This creates an infinite mana combo, for use with Urza or whatever you'd want to make use of.
Dramatic Reversal, Isochron Scepter – This combo can also provide you with infinite mana, as long as you can make three or more mana with nonland permanents. This combo could, in theory, allow you to infinitely activate Urza, or Capsize ad infinitum as an alternative.
Jace, Wielder of Mysteries or Laboratory Maniac – This should ideally win you a bunch of the games you're playing, as you're often likely to have a much smaller library by then end of the game than you start out with.
Conclusion
This deck is probably somewhere in a fairly expensive or perhaps even cost-prohibitive range of price. There are plenty of cards you can use to substitute for others in this deck – however, these are the most efficient ones available at all in order to achieve the earliest win you can get. It's also worth noting that while I haven;t used Emry in practice, I know a ton about graveyard recursion strategies from playing so much monoblack reanimator and this uses similar principles to achieve its ends, so it's probably pretty good regardless.
What do you think? Have you played with Emry yet? Is Emry basically another Urza? Let us know!
