"Ash Is My Favorite Type Of Hero…" – Cullen Bunn Talks Army Of Darkness

With the recent Dynamite announcement of a new Army Of Darkness series being written by Cullen Bunn, Byron Brewer sat down with the series writer to talk about his plans for Ash Williams and the Deadites.

AODSpace01-Cov-A-HardmanBYRON BREWER: Cullen, how does it feel to be in on the celebration of Dynamite's most successful franchise with the publication of this one-shot?

CULLEN BUNN: I couldn't be happier to be a part of this project. I'm a huge fan of Army of Darkness, both as a movie and as a comic, so it's really nice to be able to contribute to the Deadite mythos.

BB: This is all-new material, right? Not Army of Darkness reprints?

CB: As far as I know, this is all new material. My story, at least, is definitely all new and all different!

BB: How does it feel to have stories alongside the likes of writers Steve Niles, Elliott Serrano, James Kuhoric and Mike Raicht?

AODSpace01-Cov-E-SubShawCB: It's always a treat to work alongside creators I respect, and these folks definitely fit the bill. I'm really excited to be part of this project, but even if I didn't have a story in the book, I'd want to read it.

BB: As I understand it, your story for this one-shot will tie directly into the regular series as you become its writer. Tell us about your one-shot story and maybe mention some things you have planned for the regular series.

CB: That's right! This story serves as a bridge between what has gone before and what comes next. As for the new series, Ash is going to find himself in truly unknown territory—the cold depths of space.

BB: What is your take on Ash?

AODSpace01-Cov-D-FlanaganCB: Ash may be my favorite type of hero. He's kind of an idiot. He's kind of incapable. He's not self-aware at all. He's in way over his head. And he's the only person who can save the day.

BB: Were you a fan of the movie? If so, does it color anything you will be writing in the series?

CB: Absolutely! I love the movie. Remember watching it on opening weekend, 1992, very clearly. The movie definitely informs the new series. I'm sending Ash to space, which might seem like a pretty significant departure from what has come before, but I want the tone of the story to be very true to the movie.

AODSpace01-Cov-B-SeeleyBB: Artists like Francesco Manna, Larry Watts, Juan Francisco Moyano, Juanan Antonio and Matthew Childers will be bringing this book to life. Who will be illustrating your portion of the book?

CB: Larry Watts is illustrating my story, and he really nailed the horror, action, and humor of the piece. Going from ancient times to the Space Age in 10 pages? Larry pulls it off with panache.

BB: Why is Ash and this franchise something that has endured changing times and remain favorites?

CB: The only thing people like more than an underdog hero is a two-fisted, boomstick- and chainsaw-wielding underdog who's snappy with the one-liners.
