It's always a good thing when you sit down to read a comic and get so sucked in that you blink and the issue is over. Great writing, unique art, and a cast of characters that feel like family. That's Gotham Academy from DC Comics, written by Brenden Fletcher, and Becky Cloonan, with art by Karl Kerschl. Gotham Academy #12 follows Olive and Maps as they search for Kyle. While they find clues that point to the old Arkham Asylum, more shocking secrets about Calamity and Gotham Academy are revealed, making this an incredibly intense issue.

Over the last 12 issues of Gotham Academy, I found myself becoming more and more invested in the lives of these characters, Olive especially. She's going through some really traumatic stuff, and has been. However, you can always count on one thing; she keeps going. Now, here come the major spoilers. I didn't expect Calamity to actually affect Olive, and it really seems like she did. The scene with Olive and Dr. Strange made me feel…well, strange. I can't help but wonder where things will go from here, but I'm excited.

Besides all that, I think it's important to mention that this comic is truly a wonderful gateway for young readers into the comic world. Time and time again, I have come to realize how well developed the story is and I hope it sticks around for a long time. Now don't get me wrong…while I've passed this along to young readers, I have also bought the first trade paperback as a gift for older people that have lost touch with the comic book world. I think it's important to show people that it's not just about superheroes. In fact, there are many different types of characters to get invested in. Characters like Olive keep me coming back for more.
