Rat Queens #10 Ends The Chaos

As I sit her contemplating my feelings about the new issue of Rat Queens, I find myself overanalyzing why I am so confused. Perhaps it's because the run has had so many gaps in time, which makes it easy to forget small details, or maybe it's because Rat Queens #10 was a mediocre issue overall. I think we can all agree that the build up of this epic battle has been drawn out. However, when I finished issue #9 last month, I felt renewed in Kurtis J. Wiebe's writing talents, and Stjepan Sejic's beautiful art. So it could simply be a matter of the way the plot of issue #10 was presented.

From Image Comics, Rat Queens #10, written by Kurtis J. Wiebe, with art by Stjepan Sejic follows the main story of the town of Palisade being caught up in a chaotic battle. We are jerked from the present moments of that battle to a few past memories that mostly focus on Hannah. The reason I use the word jerked is because the shifts feel very abrupt. To me, the issue doesn't feel flow in a smooth, easy to digest kind of way. As I was reading one scene, it would change, and I'd hesitate for a moment to figure out what was going on.

I don't want to sound overly negative because there are some beautiful moments in the issue. Also, I know a few things to be true. Wiebe has a dynamite cast of characters, and I'm thankful that this ARC is finished. His writing has always proven to be entertaining, so I'm confident that things will be interesting moving forward. I think the characters have all encountered pivotal moments because of this battle, and as a result we have learned about their histories. I do have to complain a little about the lack of Betty time we got in this issue. She's always been such an entertaining part of the series. I applaud Wiebe for bringing the focus to Gary for a minute, because it's a nice nod to the readers that have been with Rat Queens since the beginning.

This is honestly a time of transition for the book with Stjepan Sejic's art coming in and the ARC reaching a resolution. I admire the detail and beauty of Sejic's style. He brings a softer side to these tough ladies. In the end, the issue is what it is. Things are wrapped up, and the foundation is set for a new beginning. I look forward to seeing what Wiebe has in store for readers, and I hope the comic can maintain a steady schedule so we can continue to get our Rat Queens fix every month.
