Thursday Runaround – From Avengelyne To Ricky Gervais
AvengersWatch: Taking the wife to the premiere of Avengers Assemble tonight. Am reminded of the time I went to the Iron Man premiere and took some very silly photos. Doubt I'll get the chance tonight though.
RossWatch: Jonathan Ross writes for the Evening Standard who crown him the King Of Comics.
When I had my first job in London I decided to re-read one of my fave series of all time — Hergé's magnificent Tintin — on the Tube to and from work. I was single at the time, and not exactly a babe-magnet, but the memory of being openly pointed out and laughed at by a couple of foxy young lady-commuters has always stayed with me. Well, Spielberg made a film out of those books! So who's laughing now, sexy commuter-girls?
Actually, it's probably still you, because it wasn't as great as it might have been. But that's not my point. My point is that what was once seen as a joke, something for those arrested in a state of permanent childhood, is not only acceptable and mainstream now but also hip. Comic books are cool, the geeks really are inheriting the earth, and the release of Avengers Assemble on April 26 is, for me, the cherry on the cake. Here's why.
KidWatch: Shia LaBoef is creating underground comics. Insane. See how fast someone buys a movie option on them.
In his short graphic novels Stale N Mate, Cyclical, and Let's Fucking Party, as well as his webcomics series Cheek Up's – all available through his self-publishing imprint The Campaign Book, also home to projects from Marilyn Manson and Kid Cudi – LaBeouf combines knowingly crude art with writing that alternates between achingly sincere and viciously nasty. It's an unusual blend if you're new to the wild world of alternative comics, but LaBeouf's no dilettante; he knows what he's doing.
JonahWatch: Jonah Hex creator, Tony de Zuñiga, has suffered a stroke.
LairWatch: Donald Bluth's Dragon's Lair becomes an App digital comic.
EarnYourComicsWatch: Use with interactive eCard device to pay for things, and receive free digital pages of a Dark Horse comic. Collect the lot and they'll send you print cooies of the comic…
GervaisWatch: Dan Fraga talks about moving from Avengelyne and Black Flag to directing the returning Ricky Gervais Show.
After working in comics, I transitioned into drawing storyboards for Music videos, commercials, and movies. One of the movies I worked on was called ATL. For that movie, I did both boards and on camera art for the lead actor, whose character was an aspiring artist. A few years later, I was asked by the producer of the movie to do the same sort of work for an MTV pilot called Hard Times. During preproduction, the creators of the show decided that they wanted some animation for the show and asked if I could do it. I said yes and I produced a minute of animation for the show.
JournalismWatch: A Tallahassee student has decided to create a work of comics journalism about a supposedly troubled neighbourhood.
Tiegen will spend the next three months getting up close and personal with Frenchtown, the historically black commercial district just north of West Tennessee Street. He has been awarded a $2,905 undergraduate research fellowship to produce a journalism comic book about the community.
Tiegen, who has collaborated on journalism comics for the online company AOL, admits he has a lot of research to do. He also needs to hire an artist. He has done inking and lettering in addition to the writing on past efforts, but he relies on others to do the drawing.
"I've never done a comic book on this scale before, trying to capture an entire community," he said.
This is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.
They say I am a work in progress. The fools.
After nearly nine years directing publicity, DC Comics v-p of publicity David Hyde is leaving the company. Over the course his tenure, Hyde has seen DC Comics reorganize itself into DC Entertainment as well as the steady growth and transformation of the comics category in the general book market.
