Eidos Montreal Are Looking to Focus More on Online Play for Future Games
Eidos Montreal are perhaps best known as the developer of the Deus Ex series, and according to a recent statement the studio plans to increase focus on online experiences in their future games.
In a post on the studio's official website, Eidos Montreal head David Anfossi said the developer will emphasize online play in its future projects.
"At Eidos Montreal, we're constantly working towards creating innovative and exciting experiences for gamers everywhere," Anfossi said. "In turn, we are placing an added emphasis on the online experiences in our games, striving to continually provide players with content that is memorable and impactful."
Eidos Montreal is best known for its single-player content, with last year's Deus Ex: Mankind Divided being a great example. However, according to Anfossi, the studios' upcoming games will truly thrive with the added element of online gameplay, and they are hiring new staff to support the shift.
"Through the inherent interactivity of online play, our universes will have the chance to thrive both now and into the future," Anfossi said. "To achieve this, we are building the teams and tools capable of supporting our ambitions."
So far, this just seems to indicate another long-time single player studios is bowing to the current trend of continued service online games to lengthy single-player ones. The shift has been a long time coming, as the studio made similar comments about online support for their games back in July.
Eidos Montreal is reportedly currently at work on the next entry in the rebooted Tomb Raider series. They are also collaborating with Crystal Dynamics on games for the new Square Enix-Marvel partnership, starting with as-yet unnamed Avengers project. Whether or not these titles will have some sort of online functionality remains to be seen.
As for Edios' flagship series Deus Ex, back in early 2017 there were rumors indicating that the series had been put on hiatus, but Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda recently insisted that the franchise is far from over. So Jensen will be back, eventually.
