Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Ifrit Raid Review
The March on Ifrit raid is still going over on Final Fantasty Brave Exvius, and it's a neat little crossover event between FFBE and FFXIV. As a player of both games, it's pretty fun to see them come together like this. As a games journalist, I do have to wonder though, just what is the point? Other than giving you the ability to summon Minfillia, Y'shtola, and Thancred, is there really much to be gained from participating in the March?
After playing the event for the last few days, all I can say for certain is that I'm not entirely sure. And that's kind of a problem, isn't it?
Because, yeah, multiplayer events in FFBE are kind of hit-or-miss in the way they often can be for multiplayer on mobile platforms. There's too little internal communication between players to really make it feel like multiplayer, and the events can often be nothing more than a soulless grind. That's not a criticism of Brave Exvius, but rather mobile titles as a whole. Quite a few of the Brave Exvius events have been decently fun and surprisingly useful. I would have never expected that I'd enjoy playing Ariana Grande in a video game, and yet, she's damn useful to my team. And so she stays.
The March on Ifrit though? I'm not too sure it's actually a fun event. Sure, it's not the worst multiplayer mobile raid I've ever played. That honor would have to go to the now-defunct Marvel: War of Heroes.
Ifrit makes for a solid challenge, and he keeps coming back stronger, and stronger. So it's a great way to train up some of your other heroes, get some xp, do some grinding. But that's it. It's like doing nothing but a roulette of the Bowl of Embers on story mode, hardmode, extreme, over and over. You don't even need to kill him to win a quest in the raid, just do enough damage and avoid dying.
The rewards are pretty solid, Y'shtola, Thancred, and Minfilia are good summons. But, it seems like they could have done a bit more with Ifrit. Maybe I'm thinking to hard on it, because Ifrit is the first Primal you face in FFXIV and so his trial is really pretty basic. Very few mechanics, just some dodge and burn with an add to take care of, an ultimate move to nerf (by killing said add), and then a whole lot of nothing. And most of that has carried over to the turn-based combat of Brave Exvius with few changes. Sure, you can't dodge and there aren't any infernal nails to kill, but the basic fight elements are there. Ifrit jumps at you, spews fire, and does his usual shtick as Lord of the Inferno.
The difficulty between levels jumps pretty high, so if you're trying to grind levels out of it, you'll probably hit a cap of when exactly your heroes start being useless. They'll go from damn effective on one difficulty to absolutely unhelpful on the next. And that brutality is pretty awesome.
Other than my pointless whining, the crossover event is pretty neat and it's a great way to get some solid heroes and spend your commute just chipping away at Ifrit's health bar. If you're looking for something a bit more complicated, maybe switch on over to FFXIV and take on the Warring Triad. Now that requires mechanics.
The March on Ifrit continues through the end of the month. Have at 'em kids. He's easier than he looks. At least the first round.
