Mechanical Squad Goals: We Tried "Disintegration" At PAX West
While we were at PAX West this month, we visited with Private Division who brought with them a proper multiplayer demo of Disintegration. There was a lot of talk about the game when it was first revealed, but up until now, we didn't get a good look at it. The single-player campaign was explained a little, but the focus of this presentation was the online multiplayer aspects. Myself and about a dozen others were put on two teams where we went head-to-head in combat. The two sides chose different factions to be a part of, each one coming with a set of soldiers, some bikes, and a big ship for you to control to handle tasks. Essentially, you man the main ship while giving orders to the others in your unit. Everyone has the same kind of structure, but with different weapons and abilities.
The main focus of the game was to deal with a nuclear core. Located somewhere on the map, one team needed to defend and the other needed to blow it up. We zoomed around ruined building trying to locate what we needed, destroying each other in the process. My team managed to win both rounds on offense and defense. One of the ships I had used some kind of plasma cannon that took people out in a hurry, but also made me lighter and super mobile in tight corners. I really got a kick out of this and see a lot of great potential for online battles and maybe even an esport. Disintegration is set to be released on PC sometime in 2020.
