Reports Claims To Have PlayStation 5 Details – Including Possible 2018 Release Date
Tech insider SemiAccurate has claimed to have gotten some key details about the PlayStation 5 early, including hardware from processors to VR support.
The idea of a new generation of consoles has been filling the zeitgeist of late. It's hard to tell if this is driven by murmurs by those in the know or the time just 'feels' right, but it seems every couple of days, someone is talking about the upcoming release of new Microsoft or Sony hardware. On that front, here is an interesting little tidbit.
We can put this firmly in the rumour mill, but SemiAccurate is claiming to have some details on the PlayStation 5. On their site (as broken down by ResetEra), they say that they've heard the console will have AMD Navi as the GPU architecture, but it won't specifically be using the upcoming GPU. On top of that, it will use an AMD Zen as a CPU. Interestingly it also claims that the company is doubling down on VR, building in the 'goodies' needed to run the headset right into the console. If true, this somewhat reminds me of Xbox One's initial commitment to their peripheral Kinect at the start of this generation. Sony would certainly be hoping it turns out better.
Interestingly, the report says that tons of consoles have already been given to developers to start their work, leading to the speculation that the console launching in 2018 is not out of the question. To me, that seems extremely unlikely though. However, if this report is true, I could see a 2019 release, something some analysts have already speculated over.
Now, of course, this is all rumour and has to be taken with a grain of salt right now. However, SemiAccurate has gotten these scoops in the past, such as specs for the PlayStation 4 in 2012 and details about the Nintendo Switch. We will have to wait and see if any of this pans out, but it certainly seems possible. Exciting year and a half ahead of us, one would think.
