State of Decay 2 Could Come to Steam After Launch

As part of IGN's State of Decay 2 month of exclusive content, they implied that Undead Labs' State of Decay 2 might end up making its way to Steam after launch. The theory comes from an error message in the PAX East demo build of the game that reads: "Login Failed. Unable to connect with Steam. Make sure Steam is running, you are logged in, no other instances are running, then restart the game." Obviously, a Windows 10 and Xbox Exclusive game doesn't require a Steam connection, which means a Steam version of the game is in the works.

From IGN's report:

Though a PC game headed to Steam isn't surprising, Microsoft has largely restricted the distribution of its exclusive games to the Microsoft Store, supporting its Play Anywhere ecosystem that allows you to play a purchased digital game on your Xbox and/or Windows 10 PC.

However, the State of Decay 2 FAQ page has listed Steam support as a topic of community interest for quite a while, simply answering, "Stay tuned – we'll have more to share in the future," indicating the developer could make an announcement at some time down the line.

But that time isn't now, and likely won't come until after the game's launch next month. Speaking to IGN, a Microsoft spokesperson stated:

"As with any game, Undead Labs uses a variety of tools during active development. We're focused on getting State of Decay 2 out on Xbox One and Windows 10 on May 22, 2018 (May 18th for Ultimate Edition Early Access). We don't have anything further to share."

As IGN points out, Microsoft does try and restrict PC access to their "exclusive" games to the Windows 10 Play Anywhere system, this wouldn't be the first time Microsoft has shared an "exclusive" game with Steam. PlayerUnkown's Battle Grounds and Black Desert Online come to mind.

As of now, State of Decay 2 is confirmed as an Xbox Exclusive, coming to Xbox One and Microsoft Windows 10 gaming platforms on May 22, 2018.
