Destiny Story Woes Explained And Entirely New Experience Coming Next Year Claims Report
Destiny's story has long been a talking point, as the structure of the narrative and how it is told were undeniably weak in the initial release. We've heard a lot of rumours about what happened, and explanations for how Bungie bungled the narrative prior to release.
Previously, we'd heard there had been a run in between long time Bungie writer, Joe Stanten and the developer which caused him to leave during production. In a lengthy report verified by six sources, Kotaku have seemingly confirmed this. They state that Bungie's higher ups were rather displeased with Joe Stanten's original story work, claiming it was 'too campy and linear', and thus threw everything out besides a few bare bone concepts. This caused the team to try and rework the game entirely in the space of a year, re-writing dialogue, changing characters and more.
Comet, the initial big expansion for the game was also changed to the Taken King later on. What's interesting is that a Mars portion of the game, which was meant to turn up in Comet has reportedly been held back for a 'full-sized sequel' release next year.
There is lots more in the report, including how the game might be dropping DLC in the future and providing microtransactions, but giving free content in updates and a lot more. Go give it a read. It's a great breakdown.
I remember stating in my initial Destiny review, that it felt like the writing staff was at war with one another. It seems I was right.
