Miyamoto Says We Probably Shouldn't Expect Mario In VR Anytime Soon
Nintendo have an… interesting history with the VR. The company once hitched its wagon to the VR train (sort of) in the Virtual Boy and created one of the worst mainstream consoles in history. Since then, especially with the resurgence of the the tech, Nintendo have indicated that they do not believe in the tech.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto seems to have reiteratred that sentiment in an interview with USA Today. Speaking about the posibillity of Mario jumping to VR now that he is coming to the mobile devices, the developer didn't seem enthusiastic, saying:
I would agree that adapting Mario to new platforms is a key to keeping him relevant, but we want families to play together, and virtual reality (which requires players to be closed off from the real world) doesn't really fit well there. We also like people playing for a long time, and it's hard to do that in VR.
This totally does make sense since Nintendo always seem to be pushing the communial, familial front for video games. Also, with the word about the Nintnendo NX being that it is a home/mobile hybrid, I seriously doubt it will have the power to run VR, so if Nintnedo ever did get into the game, it would be some way down the line.
