Oculus Creator Says The PlayStation VR Isn't As Powerful As The Oculus Rift
The VR battleground is currently being set for a big face off in 2016. Oculus have marked their position first and the Vive and PlayStation VR are expected to follow closely behind. Seeing which headset 'comes out on top' will be interesting for sure (even if I don't think it is that overly important in the long run.)
Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey had some interesting words to say about 'competitor' PlayStation VR in a recent interview with IB Times. Saying outright, Palmer believes the Oculus is a better headset than Sony's saying:
It's also worth noting that their headset isn't quite as high-end as ours — it's still, I think, a good headset — and the PlayStation 4 is not nearly as powerful as our recommended spec for a PC.
He did add that he doesn't see his and the PlayStation VR as direct competitors saying:
I think that there's not many people who already own a PS4 who don't own a gaming PC who are going to go out and make that roughly $1,500 all-in investment in the Rift. It really is a separate market. They're bringing virtual reality to a different group of people who I don't think were ever really a part of our market anyway.
This more or less falls in line with my thinking, and why I think the Oculus Rift is going to be just fine with its high price tag. This at least for now is a niche product that can slowly build an audience. The PlayStation VR seems a much more directed as a mainstream product. I cant wait to see how both shake out.
