Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3 Is The Chekov's Gun Of Time Travel

There is a story term called Chekov's gun, which basically says if you show a loaded gun in the first act, it needs to be used by the third. Or, as executive producer Phil Klemmer referenced, you don't have Ray tell Peter to never 'cross the streams' from the proton packs in Ghostbusters unless crossing the streams is exactly what will save the day. It's also why most writers are never surprised in movies. It's why I knew who Keyser Soze was through almost the entire Usual Suspects film.

I bring this up because Klemmer and Marc Guggenheim use that example to explain why they knew since the beginning of DC's Legends of Tomorrow that the team was going to end up breaking time. Because in Season 1, they were very clearly told not to.

In a interview that was partly shown during the airing of the Vixen animated movie on the CW recently, the two men explain that knowing they were going to break time was the easy part — figuring out what that means was much harder. What were the consequences? At one point they had Nazis on dinosaurs and vikings… so Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 should be fun.

They were asked their favorite episode of Season 2, which turned out to be the George Lucas story because it showed them that they could do just about anything and still make it work. It's just that kind of show. And part of why Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) has gone off to create the Time Bureau is to give the Legends a competent counterpart  to be shown against. A reminder that the Legends are actually total screw-ups.

They also talk about Zari (Tala Ashe) and how she's from the future and has a different perspective. This is the extended version of the interview where we learned that Kuasa from the Vixen series would be a villain this year on the show, and that we would get at least a glimpse of Mari McCabe this year… maybe more. They also hint at the up coming PT Barnum episode with Billy Zane and how there will be some Easter eggs at the circus — we know about B'wana Beast, but there may also be some interesting trapeze artists.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 debuts October 10th at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
