To Mystic Or Not To Mystic – Marvel's Question On Iron Fist

Iron_Fist_TLW_1_CoverMarvel Studios deal with Netflix seems to be rolling along well. They're already preparing for a second season of Daredevil with plans to include the Punisher. Jessica Jones has shed her AKA and is already filming. Luke Cage has a lead and the writers are halfway through breaking out the season. So has anyone noticed that we've heard nothing about the fourth piece of the puzzle? No casting news, no showrunners chosen… no movement forward on Iron Fist. Why is that? Devin Faraci over at Birth Movies Death has some ideas on that.

The word is that Marvel doesn't quite know what to do with the character. The Netflix characters are supposed to be street-level. You watch the first season of Daredevil and his abilities are downplayed so much that you forget he has any. Where Iron Fist is chock full of mystical elements. From the hidden city of K'un-Lun to his ability to center his chi into a glowing fist of power, these are things that are crucial to the character and make him stand out as more than just a martial artist.

Faraci says that the big hold up is that Marvel isn't sure just how much to dive into those elements. Even the ones set up in Daredevil like Madame Gao and Steel Serpent symbol on the drugs were placed as possible hooks / Easter eggs, not part of a bigger plan. Marvel has meet with multiple writers and have yet to settle on an approach.

Now, I don't see it being that big of a deal. Marvel is already moving ahead with Doctor Strange so the magical/mystical elements will be coming to the MCU sooner rather than later. And part of the draw of Iron Fist was the idea that Danny Rand grew up an outsider in this amazing mystical place. That he has honed his abilities to the point he defeated a dragon and can focus his chi to create an iron fist. I think those elements need to be in the show even if they are not center stage through the first season. You can't really have Iron Fist without his iron fist.
