World Of WarCraft Players Will Soon Be Able To Buy Subscriptions With In Game Gold

KXOC55GCHWV91425066899072It's fairly incredible how World of WarCraft has been able to keep hold of its subscription model. It really highlights the MMO's dominance in the genre, where all of it's competitors have been forced to adopt free-to-play to sustain themselves.

Today. Blizzard have announced a way for the game to be 'free' though. In quite an experimental plan, the company is instating WoW Tokens which can be redeemed for play time in the game. These tokens are bought by players who want an injection of in-game gold and put them onto the auction house. Other players then put their gold down to buy a token. It is a neat system that could make WoW free for players who spend a lot of time in the game and give those who don't a bit of extra in game currency.

The price of the tokens will be determined by a few factors. On the site's FAQ, it says:

The gold value of a Token will be determined dynamically based on supply and demand. When you put a Token up for sale, you'll be quoted the amount of gold you'll receive upon a successful sale. If you then decide to place the Token up for sale, that amount is locked in, and the gold will be sent to your mailbox after another player purchases your Token.

This all sounds like a good idea, but so did the Diablo 3 auction house. The Token system is obviously also a measure to take away from third party gold sellers, but my worry is what happens if people buy more gold from these sellers to buy tokens, thus taking Blizzard out of the loop entirely. This could all explode in their face, but I think it is really cool to see them go all in with something this experimental.

The Token system will be put into place during the next patch which doesn't have a date yet.
