SDCC '15: Aqua Teen Hunger Force Forever/Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell Panel

by Mike Sangregorio

IMG_4432Friday was Adult Swim and Cartoon Network's day in the Bayfront Hilton's Indigo Ballroom. Of the numerous panels held, no show has more of a personal connection for me than Aqua Teen Hunger Force. In case you were not sure, this cartoon has been on the air for nearly a decade and a half, more if you count the characters' prototypes appearances on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

After 11 seasons the show is finally coming to an end with its current season, titled ATHF Forever. On hand to mark the momentous occasion were, among others, Dana Snyder (voice of Master Shake), who wanted to make sure that everyone in attendance actually made sure to watch the show when it aired and had not just "showed up for Bob's Burgers or whatever it is you people waiting for the next panel are here for" and Dave Willis (co-creator, voice of Meatwad and the Mooninite Ignignokt).

A clip from the current season was shown wherein fan-favorite Carl was on-hand to make Meatwad accidentally disembowel a living tour bus, exclaim that "Frylock don't know a hairy crap about the popcorn business," and  disappear behind the wheel of his prized car emblazoned with "2 Wycked" across the side.

For me this has always been a show that people I love instantly or can barely hide their contempt for. I am the former, though results may vary, as I have been called equally as strange for entirely dismissing the efforts of other Adult Swim showrunners, Tim & Eric.

Snyder proved to be the most entertaining part of the panel, keeping the discussion lively and not hiding his contempt for anyone in the room he may have appeared to dislike for any reason. I would be very happy to wait in lines for future panels just knowing that he was the moderator alone. Hopefully CCI or some other convention can make him the unofficial go-to moderator.

After one particularly uproarious comment Snyder, in his deadpan way, told the audience "don't twist my words! I meant that in a caring and sensitive way." He want on to remind us again that this was the final season of ATHF and when the room cheered asked if we were "applauding because this is the last one so you don't have to watch anymore?"

IMG_4431Following this was a presentation of the relatively new show Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, co-created by Dave Willis and starring Henry Zebrowski as Gary, a mid-tier demon-bureaucrat in Hell who consistently fails to prove either his worth to his boss, Satan, or his merit to anyone he meets on Earth.

A clip was shown featuring Gary going through standard employee training (such as you would have with a VHS playing in a stark, backroom) to teach him the best way to shrink and appear on the shoulder of someone debating whether or not to do something they should not.

As with ATHF, Your Pretty Face has 10-12 minute episodes and features the same kind of hilarious, nonsense humor. Unlike the previous show this is live action. If the clip is anything to go off the show is well worth checking out, as I will myself be doing.

The floor opened to questions which consisted mainly of Snyder, with some help from the panelists, openly mocking people in line and anything they asked. Of the information offered up, it was revealed that of all the monsters and foes the Aqua Teens have met during their long tenure Willis' favorite is "the animated City of Boston" which fans will recognize as a reference to the 2007 bomb scare, that involved the show, as well as the response episode that has yet to be aired in any format.

Also disclosed was the fact that Master Shake was originally envisioned as a Christopher Walken impersonator prior to the casting of Snyder, who had been working at a drama book store before getting the job. When asked if his Meatwad voice ever makes an impromptu appearance in his day-to-day life Willis informed the crowd that it was mostly around "babies and cats" though he was fond of using it to dirty talk with his wife.

ATHF Forever premiered June 21, 2015. YPFIGTH has its second season premiere July 12, 2015. Both air Sunday nights on Adult Swim.
