Ridley Scott Moves Into TV, TNT Orders A "Block Of Science Fiction"

One of the most brilliant minds in science fiction genre filmmaking is going to build a block of television for TNT.  Sure, maybe his panache is different than it was 30+ years ago, but no one does space quite like Sir Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien).

Scott has been tapped to develop a block of "original science fiction programming".  Early reports indicate we'll see things like original drama hourlong series, short form, and 'other formats to be developed' with Ridley at the helm.

"Being given the creative license to generate and develop science fiction programming in a variety of formats for TNT is very exciting. This genre is one of my favorites, and there are an infinite amount of original and innovative story ideas out there that we are looking forward to exploring with TNT. It is very exciting for all of us."

This sounds extremely promising actually, as one thing we've come to learn about Ridley over this past year is his desire to hold the strings for anything with his name on.  Completely understandable, but not always the best thing for the story *points at Alien: Covenant*.  It does mean however that once again a larger network is making the move towards original science fiction programming, after so many years of a barren wasteland where one or two shows struggled to make it.

His most recent forays into television (as executive producer) received midline critical reception. The Tom Hardy led series Taboo may have been a little too strange for the majority of audiences, but the dark and twisted period series about stolen diamonds, war, and death.  The series has been picked up for a second season, with Scott Free London returning to produce.

TNT's EVP of Original Programming Sarah Aubrey sure knows what to say to make even the most cynical of recent Ridley critics hopeful:

"We're looking to create a programming block filled with the kind of imaginative, awe-inspiring storytelling that has made science fiction such a beloved and enduring genre. Ridley Scott has created some of the best and most popular science-fiction movies of all time, and we look forward to bringing his fans even more of his smart, sophisticated stories."

No word yet on when we may see this block, expect an update sometime next year.
