Star Trek: William Shatner Not Sounding Optimistic About Kirk's Future
William Shatner's response about whether or not Star Trek fans will see him as Kirk again was passive-aggressively not too promising.
The Star Trek family is one big happy family, not that you would know it if you ask the franchise's first lead, William Shatner. The Original Series star, who has no doubt been confronted time and again online and at conventions about a possible return to the franchise, offering a more definitive, if not passive-aggressive, response to another fan inquiry. The fan replied to Shatner's initial post about his support for Generations co-star and Next Generation/Picard lead Patrick Stewart's news about a film script in development for another adventure. "I think that a new movie with Sir Patrick is wonderful news. And…👇🏻" he wrote, adding a gif from 1937's Snow White with the non-related caption "Haters Gonna Hate."
Another fan followed up with, "But will we ever see Captain Kirk again?" completely ignoring the Kelvin universe timeline incarnation played by Chris Pine and Strange New Worlds actor Paul Wesley, both of whom made public appearances with the Canadian actor in a show of solidarity and torch-passing moment. Shatner responded to the fan with a screenshot from the Paramount+ mobile site for the Star Trek landing page, mostly comprised of the leads of franchise shows with Scott Bakula (Enterprise), Anson Mount (SNW), Sonequa Martin-Green (Discovery), Avery Brooks (Deep Space Nine), Tawny Newsome (Lower Decks), Kate Mulgrew (Voyager, Prodigy), and Stewart (The Next Generation, Picard). On the left side are Leonard Nimoy (TOS) and LeVar Burton from (TNG, Picard). Guessing Shatner continues to feel slighted not being represented on the streamer's landing page.
While Shatner's appeared in behind-the-scenes videos of certain shows, including a recent one that includes Picard production designer Dave Blass handing the actor a plaque of the Enterprise-G, introduced at the series finale, the actor hasn't appeared in any of the new canon, not even as a voiceover for Very Short Treks. Other TOS surviving cast members, Walter Koenig and George Takei, made cameos in Picard and Lower Decks, respectively, while Shatner's final physical appearance was in 1994's Generations, which killed his incarnation off after a valiant fight alongside Stewart's Picard.
