WWE SmackDown 6/19/20 Report Part 2: Cult Leader Bray Wyatt Returns

In the first part of our WWE SmackDown report, AJ Styles was presented with the new WWE Intercontinental Championship and then fought a debuting Matt Riddle and Jeff Hardy gave an interview about his recent struggles in life and against Sheamus. Read about it here. Now it's time for a match between Shorty G and Mojo Rawley as we kick off part two of our Smackdown report.

Smackdown comes back from a commercial break as the match starts. Rawley attacks Shorty G from the jump, whipping him from corner to corner and hitting him with strikes, but Shorty fights back with an ankle lock and a Northern Lights Suplex. Rawley hits Shorty with the Snake Eyes and tackles him for a two count. Rawley pounds on Shorty on the ground. He puts him in a modified sleeper and tosses him into the ropes. Shorty gets a sleeper on Rawley but Rawley escapes to the floor. Rawley splashes Shorty in the corner and goes for another, but Shorty dodges and hits a German Suplex. Shorty tries for a crossbody off the rope but Rawley catches him. Shorty rolls up Rawley in an inside cradle for the pinfall. Rawley throws a tantrum in the ring and SmackDown goes to commercials.

Back from break and Miz and Morrison are in the ring for their Miz TV interview with Mandy Rose. Before that though, Miz wants to talk about Backlash. Miz apologizes for pulling Morrison off Braun Strowman when Morrison had him pinned. Morrison says it's okay, it's WWE's fault for changing the rules. They wanted to be co-champions, but WWE said whoever got the pin would be the sole champion. Miz says they also had to worry about that oaf Otis, looking over their shoulders the whole time. If not for Otis, one of them would be Universal Champion.

Miz brings out Mandy Rose. Miz wants to talk about Mandy's best friend Sonya Deville. Mandy says they're ex-best friends. Miz and Morrison needle Mandy about Sonya so she tries to leave, but they apologize. Miz says they have a surprise for Mandy. Sonya Deville comes out. Mandy doesn't want anything to do with Sonya, but Sonya says she can't be done with Mandy because she watches her get the spotlight in the ring each week and she doesn't deserve it. Mandy says she'd be in catering doing nothing if not for Miz and Morrison. The promotion for SmackDown is all about Mandy with no mention of Sonya. But Sonya doesn't think Mandy has done anything with her opportunities. She hasn't won matches or said anything of value. All she's done is make out with Otis. Sony congratulates Mandy on an awesome 2020.

Mandy wants to know what Sonya wants. She can hurt Mandy physically and emotionally, but Mandy has people by her side and Otis has been there for her. He's been loyal since day one. Mandy wants to know what Sonya has going for her besides being a fighter. She says Sonya is alone and wants to know how long she's going to hold onto her resentments. Sony ways she's not mad at Mandy anymore. She's just wondering what she has to do to be treated like Mandy by WWE. The only difference she sees between them is Mandy's looks. Sony says she's superior in every other way. Sonya is done. She's going to take away the one thing that matters to her. She's going to rip her apart until her outsides are as hideous as her insides.

Rose and Deville brawl around the ring. Sonya eventually bails out and backs up the ramp, shouting at Mandy. Mandy slaps Miz and leaves. The announcers promote Firefly Funhouse for later and then play a video package for Sasha Banks and Bayley. Banks and Bayley head to the commentary table and SmackDown heads to commercials.

Back from break, The New Day heads to the ring for a match against Lucha House Party. The New Day toss their entrance gear at the women's tag champs, who are disgusted by it. Kofi Kingston and Lince Dorado start off the match. As Kofi works an armbar on Dorado, Banks and Bayley accuse Michael Cole of sexism for saying the New Day are the greatest tag champs. Dorado and Kingston trade grapples and flippy reversals. On commentary, Banks and Bayley are mocking Cole by repeating what he says in a goofy voice and it's amazing. I could listen to this all day, a stark contrast from WWE's usual commentary.

Kingston tags in Big E, who hits a Belly to Belly (Banks and Bayley scream "Bayley to Belly") on Dorado, then another one over the top rope. Gran Metalik hits Big E with a dropkick, then both Lucha House Party members hit big dives on the New Day onto the floor as SmackDown goes to commercials again.

When Smackdown comes back, Big E is working over Dorado in the ring. Dorado goes for a crossbody but Big E catches him. Dorado wriggles out and Big E knocks him to the ground and hits the Big Splash. Big E puts Dorado in the Abdominal Stretch… a classic. Big E whips Dorado into the drops and Dorado bounces back with a stunner. Both men tag out and Kingston hits Gran Metalik with some strikes and a dropkick. Metalik returns fire with some chops and a bulldog. Kofi catches him with a dropkick mid-air off a flippy move and gets a two-count.

Kingston goes for Trouble in Paradise, but Metalik catches him on his shoulders. Dorado tags in and hits a dropkick on Big E. Metalik plants Kingston and Dorado hits a frog splash, broken up by Big E. The Luchas dump Big from the ring and go for top rope moves on Kingston, but the New Day stop them. Kofi hits a double stomp and tags in Big E. They hit Midnight Hour on Dorado and get the pinfall.

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura want some respect on Smackdown

Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro attack New Day immediately as the bell rings. Cesaro hits the Gotch Neutralizer on Big E, then puts Kingston in the Cesaro Swing, which Nakamura finishes with a kick. Cesaro and Nakamura head outside and high-five Sasha and Bayley. They're tired of being overlooked, they tell the announcers. Cesaro says he's been treated poorly for eight years. Banks and Bayley scold Michael Cole for treating Cesaro that way. These two are fantastic on commentary. Backstage in the performance center, Alexa Bliss, Tamina, Naomi, Lacey Evans, and Dana Brooke argue about who should get to face Bayley and/or Banks and Bayley next. Alexa wonders where Nikki Cross wandered off to as SmackDown goes to commercials again.

After the break, Kayla Braxton interviews Sheamus. Sheamus looks satisfied like he just drank a warm glass of piss during the break. Sheamus says lines have been crossed in his feud with Jeff Hardy. What Hardy said really got to him. Sheamus can't keep this up and admits he is a bully, laughing. He says people like Hardy deserve to be bullied. He's only sorry he didn't break Hardy's voicebox so Hardy couldn't whine so much. Sheamus says that, deep down, Hardy doesn't believe in himself. If Hardy can't lift himself up, Sheamus will do it for him. Sheamus says he is going to toast Jeff Hardy next week, so bring your best bottle of piss, boyos.

Banks and Bayley are still at the commentary table, which makes me happy for a moment because Cole and Corey Graves suck but they are awesome, but then Nikki Cross attacks them out of nowhere. Alexa Bliss comes out to break up the fight. Cross demands Banks get in the ring and fight her now. Bayley accepts the match on Sasha's behalf and SmackDown takes yet another commercial break.

SmackDown comes back from break with the match in progress. Cross shoves Sasha and hits a dropkick, but Sasha begs off. Cross falls for it and gets dumped from the ring. Banks tries a baseball slide but Cross catches her in the apron and hits some punches. She tosses Banks back in the ring and goes to the top, but Sasha rolls out of the ring.

Cross hits a crossbody off the apron. She throws Sasha back in and hits a clothesline in the corner. Sasha reverses a bulldog into the Banks Statement and covers cross for two, then again for one. Banks chokes Cross with her boot in the corner. She hits a snap mare and puts Cross in a chin lock, but Cross powers out immediately. Sasha knees her in the back and stretches her arms. Cross fights back with a butt bump and some elbows. Cross heads to the apron and hits a kick, then to the top rope.

Banks interrupts her climb and they battle on the turnbuckle. Nikki rams Sasha's head into the buckle, then hits a Tornado DDT for a two-count. Cross goes for a suplex, but Banks reverses. They battle on the ropes and Banks gets Cross into the Banks statement, but Cross escapes and gets a two-count on Banks with a crucifix pin. They trade some more pin attempts and Banks hits a Meteora pinning combo for the pinfall.

We see a segment congratulating Titus O'Neil for being named a finalist for ESPN's 2020 Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for his work with the Bullard Family Foundation in Tampa. Braun Strowman watches a promo for the Firefly Funhouse as SmackDown heads to its last commercial break.

Back from break, we see a recap of the opening segment between AJ Styles and Matt Riddle. Next week, Styles will fight Drew Gulak for the Intercontinental Championship next week. There's also the piss toast to Jeff Hardy. WWE has a nice graphic with Sheamus and a glass of urine. Now it's time for the Firefly Funhouse.

Bray Wyatt is back, and he says it's been way too long. Wyatt tells us what he's been up to. He joined a book club, learned Tik Tok dance moves, mastered the dark art of resurrecting the dead, learned how to knit, and infiltrated a Reptilian stronghold. Rambling Rabbit says he's actually just been whining about losing to Braun Strowman for the past few weeks. Wyatt is not happy, but he moves on.

Wyatt says he did lose to Strowman, but it made him realize he went about this the wrong way. He starts to talk about his and Strowman's relationship, but Strowman interrupts, heading to the ring. Wyatt gives him a thumbs down from the Titantron. Strowman grabs a mic and tells Bray he had his opportunity and failed. There are no more games, and their story is over.

Wyatt laughs. He says their chapter may be over, but he wasn't lying about resurrecting the dead. He says their story is just getting started. We see some clips of old Wyatt family stuff, and then Wyatt appears in his old cult leader gimmick. He says, in order for them to move forward, they must go back to where they began. Wyatt created Braun, so it's his duty to destroy him. Strowman knows where t find him. All he has to do is follow the buzzards. Smackdown ends with old school Wyatt saying "run" and blowing out his lantern. Watch it here.

Well, that was something. I'm not entirely sure how to feel about Bray Wyatt going back to his own gimmick, but I suppose it has potential for him to be able to switch between any of his gimmicks depending on the situation, kind of a cross between Matt Hardy and Mick Foley. Smackdown had some decent wrestling tonight, a changeup from Raw earlier in the week, which had very little wrestling and mostly interviews and other shenanigans. Riddle's debut was distracting because of the allegations being made right now. Banks and Bayley on commentary were the highlight of the show for me, but a close second is Sonya Deville, who has transformed from a serviceable performer into an excellent heel and master of character work. Overall, it was a pretty good episode.
