Todd McFarlane Says Spawn Will Be "Dark, Ugly," with "No Joy"

It seems that we can expect the world of superhero movies to once again change when the new Spawn movie eventually makes it to screen. We just aren't sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing. The Spawn reboot is a project that Todd McFarlane has almost total creative control over since he is writing, directing, and producing the project. That kind of control over a property is unheard of when it comes to big superhero movies and it's going to be interesting to see how it works out in the end. McFarlane is doing an interesting job talking about the movie and by interesting we mean he sounds like a 13-year-old edgelord and not in a good way. McFarlane spoke to the Nerdist about the tone of the movie and he was a bit dramatic about it.

"There's no joy," McFarlane told me. "There's gonna be no fun lines in it, and it's just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There's not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time."

A movie can be grim, dark, but still be a lot of fun it's just a very different kind of fun. In fact, it usually ends up being more catharsis of seeing the bad guys get what's coming to them. However, McFarlane sounds like he is desperately trying to sound as edgy as possible and instead it's making him sound ridiculous.

Spawn has signed Jamie Foxx as the titular character, Jeremy Renner will play Detective Twitch, and horror master Jason Blum is also set to produce. Spawn is currently in pre-production.
