"EVE Online" Players Taken Off-Guard By Surprise Alien Attack

Wanna know how to stir things up for your players? Surprise them often! Which is what EVE Online did this week with an alien invasion that caught everyone off-guard. PC Gamer was the first to report on the surprise event and has been keeping pretty good tabs on what the hell is going on as the entire game is now in chaos. This is a first for the long-running MMO as players are being attacked at random by NPC characters without provocation, as they tend to leave you alone for the most part if you don't attack them. It should have been no surprise to players considering the last expansion name was specifically called "Invasion" when it was released in May 2019, but this was totally unexpected.

The specific NPC faction going after everyone is the Drifters, who are basically making random attacks all across New Eden and causing havoc in their wake. A lot of the bases that players have relied on and called home for years are constantly having to be reinforced and ships are constantly in search for repairs in the game if they get caught in the firefight. It appears that there is no one single player faction that is safe as the Drifters seem to be attacking everyone at once, and the devs even hinted at the idea online that they wouldn't stop until the entire map was in their control. So, this may just be a guess here, but it seems like the only way to thwart the threat is for everyone to ban together. But if you know ANYTHING about the history of EVE Online, you know you have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting everyone on board with that plan. So we may be on the verge of seeing this game take an entirely different path in the future.
