Celebrating Juan Serrano's Dark Visions – With Art Gallery

By José Luis del Río Fortich

I'd like to introduce to you the amazing work of the Spanish artist Juan Serrano. This Madrid native is best known for his fantasy illustrations published in numerous art books, magazines such as Cthulhu, on book covers, in boardgames and on cards.

He works for American companies Avatar Press, Dark Planet or Arcana Studios. He also created illustrations for card games like Vampire: the Eternal Struggle (White Wolf, Inc. in 2008), Shadowfist (Z-Man Games, Inc. in 2009) and Call of Cthulhu (Fantasy Flight Games in 2010).

He also designs characters for boardgames and for  RPG. I love the work he does for the Spanish publising house Valdemar, a Gothic publisher where you can find horror as well as classic stories. He created the book covers for Solomon Kane, Zothique, Black Cannaan and other Gothic-style books.

As you can see in his works, the artist has been inspired by Lovecraft´s myth of Cthulhu, and plenty of horror and fantasy traditions. In particular, he is enthralled by dark fantasy and he captures these dark visions in his works. You can visit his web page here.

José Luis del Río Fortich is a child of the seventies who grew up with comics and MSX. Then he moved to the Commodore Amiga, Twin Peaks and finally to Macintosh. In his nearly 40´s he keeps reading comics, playing computer games and reviewing series. He loves Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Zombies, Horror Movies and all those things that are not necessary in an apocalypse but we all love. He is @jldelriofortich and on Facebook.
