Geeking Out in the Kitchen – To Boldly Slice

By Will Romine, Age 32.

Hi ho! Welcome to "Geeking Out in the Kitchen", where I test and evaluate fandom based cooking equipment and give my honest feedback.  Today's item is the Star Trek Enterprise NC-1701 Pizza Cutter.  The fine folks at Entertainment Earth sent this to me to solve all of my pizza cutting woes.

This pizza cutter is a thing of beauty, almost too beautiful to use.  But use it I must!  If I'm going to sully this beautiful mirror finish, I'm not going to do so on some cut-rate frozen pizza.  No friends, a pizza cutter this beautiful must cut a pizza just as beautiful.  My friends, let me take you on a journey to the best pizza crust ever.

The BEST Pizza Crust Ever!

Ingredients:  7 3/4 cups of White Flour (plus more for dusting), 1/4 tsp of Instant Yeast, 1 3/4 tsp of Salt, 3 cups of Water (90-95 degrees fahrenheit).

Preparation

  1. 1. Mix 3 tablespoons of water with 1/4 tsp of yeast. Set aside.  Yeast mixture will bubble when ready.

2. Mix the flour with the remaining water until fully incorporated.

3.  Sprinkle salt over the top of the dough.  Stir in the yeast mixture.  Fold the dough over itself several times until the until the salt and the dough are fully incorporated.  Keep your hands wet so the dough doesn't stick.  Set the dough aside for an hour.

4. After an hour, fold the dough over itself several times.  You'll want to knead it well.  Use flour to ensure that the dough does not stick to your work-surface.

5.  Set aside for twelve hours.

6. After twelve hours, the dough will be 2-3X its original volume. and should look something like this

7.  This batch should yield 4-5 pizzas and should be divided accordingly.  You can keep this dough in the fridge for up to 3 days, but DO NOT FREEZE!

8.  Roll out your pizza and top as you please.  For one of my 4 pizzas, I made a margarita pizza with fresh basil and buffalo mozzarella.

9.. Once the pizza crust is golden brown, and the cheese melted, remove from the oven, let it rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve!

VERDICT:  The pizza slicer holds up well.  With many slicers, the blade isn't quite sharp enough for crust.  You have to roll over the same slice-line several times before you can divide the pizza for individual enjoyment.  Not the case here.  The Star Trek Enterprise NC-1701 Pizza Cutter has only one job, and does it well.  The blade rolls effortlessly through both the inner crust and the thicker edge portions.  I thought that the nacelles of the ship's body might make for an awkward grip. Surprisingly, not the case.  This cutter is a fine example of a novelty kitchen utensil that holds its own against anything you would find in a high end kitchen supply store.

Enough jibber-jabber.  It's time to eat pizza.  I'm going to come at you with more geekly kitchen gadgets and recipes later, but for now, follow me @notacomplainer.
