Anchorman 2 Plot Teases, And A "Tentative" Return For Christina Applegate

Now that we know Anchorman 2 is officially a go, director Adam McKay has been more than happy to share more details about what we might get to see in one of the most highly anticipated sequels in recent years.

The whole gang will be back, including Will Ferrell as lead Channel 4 anchor Ron Burgundy, Steve Carell as dimwitted weather guy Brick Tamland, Paul Rudd as self-proclaimed stylish one of the group Brian Fantana and David Koachner as sports reporter Champ Kind, but what of ambitious anchorlady Veronica Corningstone herself, Christina Applegate?

McKay remains cautiously optimistic about her return, though he admits that, in the grand tradition of male-centric franchises, the female roles aren't quite so essential:

…kind of in the Austin Powers tradition, they always flip out the lead lady. No, we haven't written it yet, but we have an idea for her that we think is pretty cool. So tentatively right now she's in. But obviously we kind of have to let it be what it's gonna be, we don't want to handcuff ourselves, but we love Applegate, so any chance to work with her is always fun. So, yeah, that's it.

As for what her role might entail, McKay remains mostly mum, probably due in no small part to the fact that there is no script yet. He and Ferrell will not even begin to write it until next week, but he did share two teasing phrases to Slate about possible plot points:

Keep in mind we're still writing the story, but I'll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I'll give you that. I'll give you one other one: bowling for dollars.

As we left Ron and Veronica at the start of their happily ever after, which apparently included co-anchoring a network news show together, it would be pretty sad to see them at each other's throats again. But hey, he could always woo her back with a jazz flute serenade. Your guess is as good as mine on what bowling for dollars means, but it certainly sounds just about absurd enough to fit right into this 1970s alternate universe.

McKay also teased a rough timeline of things to come, with filming set for January or February of 2013 and a release date that could come as early as Christmas 2013 or as late as May 2014. Let the countdown begin.
