Timeless Wise Words From The Soapbox

You say the name Stan Lee and most people think about larger-than life character that cameos in most Marvel movies. Others think about the debate about creators right and how credit for the early Marvel characters were presented. For some growing up in the 70s and 80s he was the face and voice of comics. But put all that aside and remember his other contribution… Stan's Soapbox. A small column that ran in the letter pages for years. Stan used this forum to touch on the hot topics of the time. Not long ago all of them were collected into a book to help raise money for The Hero Initiative. This is the synopsis for the book:

The wit and wisdom of the caliph of comics is on display for all to see in one mighty volume! ALL of Stan Lee's groundbreaking, legendary "Stan's Soapbox" columns from 1967 to 1980 are collected for the first time EVER! And that's not all! Columns are presented in a historical context, so you can immerse yourself in the flavor of the day, and get a sense what was happening right outside Stan's window when he penned 'em. Some are poignant, some informative, some touching, and some funny. But they're all memorable! AND a bountiful bevy of celebs also write about their most memorable columns, including: – Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada – X-Men movie producer Tom DeSanto – And a vast variety of great names from the fields of comics, literature, politics and academia

So what made me bring up Stan's Soapbox today? Dan Brereton. He posted one of the more poignant soapboxes that is as true today as it was back then. Now, if my copy of Stan's Soapbox wasn't in a box in storage, I would find the exact date this ran… bur regardless, its a piece that is sadly still relevant today. And remember this the next time you see Stan on the big screen.

And buy a copy of the book… it's for a good cause.
