Two Doctors And The Heart Of The Beast – More Dynamite News

Another day and another batch of interesting news coming out of Dynamite Entertainment. We have three bits of business for you this time all scheduled for May release.

We kick it off with a sneak peek of Mark Waid on the fourth Gold Key comic from the publisher, Doctor Spektor: Master Of The Occult. (I knew it would get a subtitle before too long.) Joining Waid will be Fantastic Four artist Neil Edwards. The book is scheduled to hit stores May 28th.

In the new series, Doctor Adam Spektor has spent the past fifteen years travelling the globe, ending the threat posed by werewolves, vampires, ghosts, and other supernatural beings.  Beyond his monster hunting, he has become renowned as a television legend, Wall Street wolf, internet mogul, tabloid bad boy, master metaphysicist, and spiritualist.  Yet his success has brought him no peace.  Some part of him is missing, something he needs, but can't name.  The Master of the Occult is about to find what's missing… and in a very unlikely place.

"This project is a blast," says Mark Waid.  "It plays into all the non-superhero things that interest me – magic, performance, celebrity culture, and the pressures one feels under the public spotlight.  Doctor Spektor is a pop-culture illusionist who's half Criss Angel, half Van Helsing – a demon hunter who has turned vampire-and-werewolf-and-zombie killing into a reality show.  Now he's finally found something that scares even him – and the world watches him crumble when he tries to confront it.  Can he redeem himself in the public eye, and in his own?"

We then move on over to our second doctor making a house call… Doc Savage. Aside from the acclaimed regular series, there is going to be a Doc Savage Annual 2014 written by Shannon Eric Denton and art by Robert Castro.

In Doc Savage Annual 2014, Doc Savage and the Ghosts of War: After the recent loss of a squadmate from the War To End All Wars, Doc will travel to South America to connect with an old love and reassess his place in the world. His sabbatical is anything but relaxing as Doc confronts a mysterious ghost-army, a secret league of scientists and all the dangers of an ancient death-temple but these encounters are nothing compared to what Doc will discover about himself…a truth that will change Doc Savage forever.

"Doc Savage was first," says writer Shannon Eric Denton. "The king of the superheroes and the archetype from which all others sprang. The legacy of this Man of Bronze runs deep and I'm honored beyond belief to now join its ranks."

And finally, we get the return of a classic as the long out of print graphic novel The Heart Of The Beast gets republished. Released twenty years ago, this book written by Dean Motter and Judith Dupré featured early painted art from Fatale and Criminal artist Sean Phillips.

The Heart of the Beast explores the timeless themes of classic horror literature, set against the backdrop of New York City's decadent art world of the nineties.  Sean Phillips personally spent months scanning all the original art, so it can be provided to the public in a beautiful brand-new hardcover! Sandra, a beautiful and young bartender, meets the enigmatic Victor, a man with strange scars and stranger secrets.  A tale of gothic love and modern horror, this graphic novel drew praise from critics and fans alike.

"I'm not sure why Dean and Judith trusted me with painting almost a hundred pages of their story," says the artist phenom Sean Phillips. "I'd been drawing comics professionally for over ten years back then, but almost all for UK publishers and mostly sci-fi. New York was as much sci-fi as Mega City One to me then though, as I'd never been there. Still, I'm glad they did and I got to illustrate their great story and learn to paint in the process. It all turned out alright even if nobody bought the book. After spending months scanning all the original art, it's great to see it remastered and available again in a handsome new hardcover."
