Only 17% Of Nintendo Switch Users Downloaded The App
Let's take a brief moment to ignore all the commentary about Nintendo Switch Online. Let's throw out all the reports from people who didn't like the idea before it was announced, let's put aside all the reports from people who got ahold of it ahead of time and criticized it, and let's put all the negative feedback it has already received on iTunes and Google Play on a shelf. Cool? Let's collectively take a moment to put all of that away and take a deep breath. … You good? Cool. Now let's look at the actual numbers.
This little chart here comes to us from Sensor Tower, who basically measure how well an app is downloaded over the course of its existence. This little chart came from Forbes who has been monitoring how the app is performing. So what do the numbers actually tell us? According to Forbes, the Nintendo Switch sold over 4.7 million units. To date, even with Splatoon 2 being released and giving the Nintendo Switch Online app a boost, the app has only been downloaded 780,000 times between both app providers.
When you do the math, that comes out to roughly 17% of total Switch owners have downloaded the app. And while Japanese audiences have been kind to rate it, the total number of ratings after the app was actually released to the public is 78% bad and only 22% good. In short: the app is a flop on its first week out of the gate, even with a massively successful multiplayer game behind it.
