Capcom's Resident Evil 7 VR Demo 'Kitchen' Spooks Us At NYCC

If you were at New York Comic Con today, surely you noticed the gigantic dilapidated rural house smack dab in the middle of the convention floor. Capcom has pulled out all the stops this year in presenting its Resident Evil 7 VR demo to the public. The eerie, spooky house comes equipped with five rooms each sporting the new virtual reality experience.

Three of the rooms were reserved for the "lantern" demo, which I hope to get to play tomorrow. To gain access to the lantern demo, you must line up as the con opens to receive a specified time slot. Capcom however, was smart enough to anticipate that this would leave a large majority of the con goers without an opportunity to experience their game. Luckily, they whipped up not one, but two demos to play at New York Comic Con. The lantern demo, which is clocked as a twenty to thirty-minute experience, and the kitchen demo which is a shorter five-minute sample.

The kitchen demo is available to anyone who has the patience to wait for it. The line usually takes about an hour, to an hour and a half. Unlike some game demos I've waited for at NYCC, this one was really worth it. The immersion of VR horror is unlike anything I have experienced through the medium thus far.

From here on in, there are a bunch of spoilers, for those that want to avoid those.

The game opens with the player tied to a chair. Using the PS4 controller, the player must knock down a video camera placed in front of him to begin the sequence. An unnamed ally wakes up from the noise, and tries to free you. He is halted when a ghoulish girl impales him. The virtual knife was only inches away from my face at this point, and my heart couldn't help but start racing. There is a sequence in which you are stabbed in the leg, and my body actually jerked in response. There is little to no dip in graphics quality for the VR, making the entire experience hauntingly realistic. The surround sound system of the headphones also provides an atmospheric sense of terror. The entire demo was only five minutes, and it felt more like the action was happening to me rather than by my hand, but was exillerating nonetheless.

If you have some time to kill at NYCC, I recommend braving the line and going into Resident Evil 7 VR head on. Hopefully I can nab a ticket for the full lantern demo tomorrow, I can say without a doubt I'm already hooked Capcom.
