DICE Say Making Battlefront A Re-Skinned Battlefield Would Have Been The Easy Route

BattlefrontThe Battlefield comparison has dogged Star Wars Battlefront ever since we've seen gameplay footage. To a degree, I understand it. I think they are fundamentally different games on the outside, but it definitely has that DICE 'feel' all over it.

Speaking to OXM (via GamesRadar+),  DICE general manager Patrick Bach says that just re-skinning Battlefield with Star Wars assets would have been the much easier option too. Bach said that wouldn't have been a great move for the future though:

You could have done Battlefield with a Star Wars skin; that would be safe. That would be the sane and sober thing to do if you just want to make money. That's the money-grab; go for it. But that's not very strategic in the long term. Think where you want to be in five years and you won't want that reputation behind you because that would be a burden rather than a benefit. You want a fresh start so you can go in a new direction. That's exactly what we're doing. The first Star Wars movie was in the same place. When you look at it now, it was the safest bet ever – but that's easy to say now. Back then, why would you want this space opera?

From what I've seen of Battlefront, I think it oozes authenticity, care and attention. The battlefields are some of the most active and alive I've ever experienced, so I think selling all that work as a Battlefield re-skin is somewhat…misinterpreted. I just hope the game has the legs on it to keep it going for a long time.
