Article Summary

  • The film's release has been pushed to March 2024, after initially aiming for 2023.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife breathed some new life into a franchise that people thought didn't have a chance of coming back after the 2016 film failed to connect with audiences. The film got pretty good reviews across the board and brought in over $200 million on a budget of $75 million after being released in late 2021. So, all in all, that's pretty good considering the many circumstances that followed this film. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was announced in April 2022, and for a little while, it looked like the film would be released at the end of 2023, but in July 2023, it was announced the film would be pushed back to March 2024. We're a little over two months away from the film coming out, and we're starting to learn more, including what some familiar faces will be doing. Annie Potts had a brief role as Janine Melnitz in Ghostbusters: Afterlifebut according to Empire and Potts, not only is Janine returning in a big way for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, but she's suiting up even though that wasn't initially in the script.

"It's a desperate situation, so it's all hands on deck," Potts explained. "It turns out Janine is quite capable – as most women tend to be when given the chance. … It came as a real surprise. We were weeks into shooting, and Gil [Kenan, director] came up to me and said, 'We think it's time… We're gonna have you suit up.'"

Potts and Janine have been an essential piece of the Ghostbusters puzzle from the beginning, but she hasn't had the chance to become a true member of the core team just yet. Potts explained how much fun she had with this new plot development: "I have to say I did [get a kick out of it]. Janine has served long and well, and I felt like she was finally getting her stripes, you know? She's clearly stayed in touch with the guys [between Ghostbusters II and Frozen Empire], and she's really been the keeper of the flame at the Firehouse. The Ghostbusters are kind of superheroes, so it's very nice to finally be seen in that way, too." However, if fans think Janine is suiting up and putting on the proton pack as everyone else in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it turns out that isn't the case, and she's getting something different. "It's… not a proton pack," she teases. "Thank God I didn't have to put a pack on, because they're murderously heavy, and us OGs are getting on a bit." You know what? Valid, I bet those things do weigh a ton.
