It Looks Like Goldberg May Have At Least One More Last Match Ever In WWE

Last night's WWE Survivor Series event was promoted heavily based on a one-time-only return for former WCW and WWE world champion Bill Goldberg after twelve years away from the squared circle (that's another name for a wrestling ring). With that in mind, fans were pretty shocked to see Goldberg defeat legit badass monster Brock Lesnar in under two minutes, after two spears and a jackhammer, and basically no offense from Lesnar. However, it looks like the finish may have been due to a recent decision to keep Goldberg around WWE for a while.

According to Dave Meltzer, pro wrestling's fitter, more attractive version of Rich Johnston who breaks all the actual news about wrestling in his subscription-only newsletter which is then copied by every other wrestling site, Lesnar himself believed more money could be made from a longer feud with Goldberg, and with Goldberg agreeing to stick around, the company decided to further Goldberg's push by having him squash an overconfident Lesnar in last night's bout (wait, are you telling us these match results are predetermined?!). Part of rumormongering in any genre is educated guessing, and a one-time squash of Lesnar by Goldberg doesn't seem to make much long-term sense for WWE, so even without Meltzer's insider gossip, this does seem like the likely conclusion to draw from last night's ending.

This report contradicts theories that Lesnar may have been in trouble with WWE, perhaps for embarassingly failing a PED test during his brief return to UFC earlier this year, though Lesnar seems immune from that sort of punishment from WWE. Another theory suggested Goldberg was too injured or otherwise incapable of competing in a longer match, but that never stopped him before.

A lot of fans on the internet have complained about the result, claiming that Lesnar's loss to an aging veteran who's been out of the ring for over a decade and won't be making a full time return is a waste of Lesnar's "rub," a term which describes one wrestler's ability to transfer star power to another through a defeat, which "internet smarks" – wrestling fans who follow the behind-the-scenes business of wrestling – obsess over endlessly. In this reporter's humble opinion, however, seeing an overconfident Lesnar surprised and beaten at his own squash match game by Goldberg makes Lesnar's own story more interesting, and will have me tuning in for a future rematch even more excited than than the first time.
