Never Underestimate Your Boyfriend's Mother – Turning It Up A Notch On Supergirl

Last night, Kevin Smith returned to the director's chair for the episode that look like it will set up the rest of the season of Supergirl. The title was Distant Sun, but it could also have been called Distant Son as the episode focuses on Mon-El (Chris Wood) not wanting to be prince of Daxam anymore and moving away from his parents. The problem is that Rhea (Teri Hatcher) is not happy at all and puts a bounty on Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), thinking that if Kara is dead, Mon-El will return home. Rhea did this without Lar Gand (Kevin Sorbo) knowing. Which puts him in an awkward position when they deny having done it when Mon-El asks.

The two aliens who try to collect are interesting to say the least. One is an ugly thing with a laser eye that doesn't last long against the Girl of Steel. The other is a telepath that I think we've seen before or at least how his powers work… he takes control of Mon-El and forces him to fight Supergirl, but Guardian (Mehcad Brooks) and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) save the day and we end up seeing a telepathy showdown between the alien and J'onn J'onzz (David Harewood)… which J'onn wins. This gives them proof that Rhea is behind the bounty. The problem is that the DEO can't do anything as they have been told specifically to stand down by President Marsdin (Lynda Carter).

While all this going on, there is a subplot of Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (Floriana Lima) running into one of Maggie's ex-girlfriends. It's an awkward thing, but Alex tries to be good about it and have them all meet for dinner. But the ex, Emily, doesn't show and Maggie gives a partial truth about some painful things she was told as the relationship ended. Alex tries to confront Emily and learns the reason they broke up was that Maggie had cheated. This leads Alex to confront Maggie, not about the cheating, but about not trusting her to tell her the truth. It's a really nice character moment for both of them and leads to Maggie getting closure on her longest relationship to date.

Supergirl convinces Mon-El that they should confront his mother and try to make her see that he is happy on Earth. But it goes very badly and Rhea attacks Kara with a pair of Kryptonite sais… kind of badass really… Mon-El gets her to stop by agreeing to go with his parents. This is where Lar finds out that Rhea was behind the bounty. She puts Mon-El in a cell and prepares to leave Earth. J'onn goes against the President's wishes and they teleport onto the Daxam ship, he in the guise of Supergirl to through off Rhea. While Winn ports into the cell section and frees Mon-El. Supergirl joins the battle and there is a bit of a fight and some space decompression… someone got sucked out into the void… but in the end Lar puts up a shield, stops the decompression and then calls off the fight, letting Mon-El and his friends leave.

J'onn is chastised by the president and we get to see that she is an alien. And while they are leaving Earth, Rhea confronts Lar, telling him that he has betrayed her and then she stabs him to death. So it's pretty safe to say that Rhea is not done and plans on coming back around and messing with Kara more. Overall the episode was a slow burn, it didn't seem to be all that important and you got the feeling it would have a happy ending… but those last few minutes took it a different direction.

Supergirl goes on a few weeks hiatus now, but will return on April 24th with what appears to be a very creepy looking episode called Ace Reporter, that brings back Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez).
