New Sailor Moon Anime Announced For 2013
Peter S. Svensson writes about magical girls for Bleeding Cool.
A celebration of the Sailor Moon franchise's twentieth anniversary today culminated in the announcement of a brand new animated series set for release Summer 2013. The panel, held at a convention in Tokyo, featured the original Japanese voice actors for Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, the original editor of the manga, and a performance by current pop group Momoiro Clover Z via simulcast from France, where they are guests of the Japan Expo con. Momoiro Clover Z announced that they will be performing the theme song for the new animated adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi's manga. Specifics are still unannounced, but the presence of the original voice actors for Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask suggests that they might be involved in the new series, even if they do not reprise their original roles. Recent years have seen a resurgence of the franchise worldwide, with the US branch of original publisher Kodansha releasing the manga with new translations and several international sources reairing the original animated series.
Sailor Moon (Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon) came from a short comic by Naoko Takeuchi heavily inspired by the superhero fiction she devoured as a child, specifically the Super Sentai franchise (the live action hero teams that get adapted as Power Rangers) and the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman. The overwhelming success of the one-shot lead to an ongoing manga series that lasted five years, an animated adaptation that ran for 200 episodes, three films, two theatrical shorts, and several assorted specials, a series of live action musicals which lasted for fifteen years, and a live action series that aired five years ago in Japan. While the animated series and manga were a huge success internationally, the musicals and live action series never got international releases. Likewise, the anime never got a full English translation.
The current state of the anime industry makes it likely that someone will attempt to get the English rights for a new series, though whether the previous series will also be re-released is another story entirely. New information about the series will probably be forthcoming in the months to come.
