[SPOILERS] Ryan Coogler Talks the Alternate Ending for Black Panther
There is something about the ending of Black Panther that makes it a little unique compared to other Marvel movies. However, to get into that will require a spoiler warning. The The Empire Film Podcast recently sat down with executive producer Nate Moore and director Ryan Coogler and it turns out there was an alternate ending.

The thing that makes this Marvel movie different is that scenes from the mid-credits scene, T'Challa giving one hell of a speech to the United Nations, was featured in the promotional material and the trailers. This makes sense since it was either that scene or the scene with Shuri and T'Challa showing the kids of Oakland the Wakanda ship and Coogler went with the latter.
It was [almost the ending]. We played with a lot of different ways to end it. We went back and forth about the U.N., and we had a version where it was the U.N. before the scenes in Oakland at the end. But we really kind of settled on how do we want the movie to end? And it came back to that symmetry, and it came back to the most moving version of it. That's what we were asking ourselves, 'Who's more moved emotionally, that kid or the people sitting in the U.N.?' Who is that a bigger deal to for T'Challa to walk in, who's more connected to him?
It sounds like it was the kind of decision that was made later in the game because otherwise they wouldn't have shown that footage from the United Nations meeting in the trailers. That being said both scenes are pretty important on different levels and it's nice that Coogler decided the reveal to the kids in Oakland had more of an impact that the reveal to the United Nations.
Summary: T'Challa, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king.
Black Panther, directed Ryan Coogler, stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Martin Freeman. It's out now.
