The Studio Working On Phantom Dust Shuttered Suddenly – Game Still Coming

Phantom-Dust-Moves-Forward-But-Darkside-Games-No-Longer-Helming_phantomdust610

Remember Phantom Dust? Don't worry, few do. When the trailer for a new game in the series ran at Microsoft's E3 Press Conference, it was to little nostalgia. Still, the franchise has some dedicated fans and I have no doubt Microsoft want push the title past the sales of the first in the series.

When that game does finally come out though, it sadly won't be coming from Darkside Games who were slated to be working on the title. According to Kotaku, the studio was shut suddenly resulting in 50 jobs lost. Microsoft have said that they have every intention of releasing the game regardless. One Microsoft spokesperson said:

Microsoft partnered with Darkside Game Studios in the development of 'Phantom Dust,' but our working relationship has now ended/ We have great respect for their studio and their work in the industry. While we do not have anything new to share on 'Phantom Dust' at this time, we can confirm that development of the title continues. We look forward to sharing more details on the game as we get closer to release.

An anonymous account from someone within the studio paints a less appreciative picture though:

The executives who saw it were impressed and as late as this morning gave our team every indication that the project was on solid ground. Yet we got the phone call today that someone up on high who in all likelihood wasn't even aware of the game in detail shut it down.

There has been no word on who will be taking over development from here or if they will expand on work already done.

While I don't know the reasons for the studio's closure, my heart goes out to those affected.
