"The Batman": Paul Dano Eyed for The Riddler

Paul Dano is in negotiations with Warner Bros for Matt Reeves' The Batman with Robert Pattinson in the title role. Variety reports the role as the Riddler, but the studio won't confirm.

The Dano casting news comes on the heels of Jonah Hill pulling out of the project. Variety speculates Dano may have been Hill's backup choice for The Riddler and Warner Bros. had the offer set for Dano once Hill pulled out. Earlier, Warner Bros. cast Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Filming could start in late 2019 or early 2020.

Reeves took over directing The Batman from star Ben Affleck in January 2017. Warner Bros. turned to Reeves following the success of the last two Planet of the Apes films: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Reeves brought Dylan Clark from his Planet of the Apes films to produce for The Batman.

With Affleck abandoning the character and franchise, Reeves cast his own Bruce Wayne/Batman in Pattinson. Affleck last played the character in Justice League (2017) for DC Extended Universe. He also played the role opposite Henry Cavill in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

History of The Riddler in Live Action Batman Films

Dano will be the third actor to play The Riddler in a live action Batman film after Frank Gorshin in Batman: The Movie (1966) and Jim Carrey in Batman Forever (1995).

Dano is best known for his work in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), There Will Be Blood (2007), and 12 Years a Slave (2013). He was recently in the TV mini-series Escape at Dannemora, Okja (2017), TV mini-series War & Peace, and the Weekend at Bernies-type comedySwiss Army Man.

Do you think Dano is a good choice for the role?

The Batman is expected to hit theaters June 24.
