The Vast of Night – the Spooky Paranoia Trip We Need Right Now

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD In this Castle of Horror "Hangout" Episode—a mid-week episode that deviates from the planned schedule of the show—the cast discusses the new Amazon Original The Vast of Night directed by Andrew Patterson. It's a delightful film about a pair of teens (Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz)– one a switchboard operator and the other the local deejay– investigating what might be the appearance of aliens in a small town when all eyes are on the high school basketball game.

As with the best films we touch on for the Hangout Episodes, there's so much here to discuss. The Vast of Night 's conceit is that it is a lost episode of a Twilight Zone-style anthology series. But once we're through that frame, Patterson begins an intoxicating tour of a small town in New Mexico (actually the town of Whitney, Texas) circa 1959. Without even showing us the faces of his main characters, we get to follow them through a basketball court, down into some storage tunnels, out through busy parking lots to josh with townsfolk, not meandering but tripping headlong through a lost American world. Only once we've gotten to know Fay and Everett, our heroes, do we even see their faces as they settle into their jobs—both of which involve listening to callers. From there it becomes an amazingly fresh version of the kind of alien mystery that would be at home on The X-Files.

This is a fabulous movie and you can hear the cast's giddiness as they discuss it.
