You Can Play As A Woman In Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3's Campaign
The debate surrounding female representation in AAA titles has been a hot topic as long as I've been writing. And I've been writing for a while.
This is an interesting new development in that discussion. Treyarch have announced that the game's single player campaign will have customizable characters, including female options. This means that the game will be designed twice, both with a man and woman animation and performance.
When talking to Engadget (via VG247), studio head Mark Lamia explained:
It's not just a female head on a male body. It's a different set of animations for the entire game.
Adding to that campaign director and senior executive producer Jason Blundell:
We knew we were going to do fully unique male, fully unique female for all scenes and all the customization that goes for both. Thank God for Blu-ray, right?
This seems like a smart move, even if it does rub some people the wrong way. Sadly, that seems to be the way with these matter. It's encouraging to see series like Call of Duty at least trying tackle female representation.
