SDCC '15: The Orphan Black Clone Club Meet Up

Ashley Piderman wrote from San Diego Comic Con for Bleeding Cool,

My whole con was about Orphan Black, after the panel my next plan was the Clone Club meet up. This was my first time going to a fan meet up, and I wasn't disappointed. It was well worth the three and a half hours I stood in line.

The theme this year was Alison's Victory Brunch and the House of Blues was decorated to suit the theme with a lot of pink and white. Walking in fans were treated by cardboard cut outs of Helena, Rudy, and various other characters. I ended up standing next to Mrs S with her shot gun on the floor at stage right.

There where various stations set up, an eyepatch bedazzling station, a fan art wall and Fe's Photo Booth I didn't get to experience, because I wanted to be as close to the stage as possible. I did manage to grab a few of the temporary tattoos at the tattoo station. A small DNA chain and Cosima's seashell, which may or may not be my next tattoo.

The event was two hours long, kicked off by an amazingly awkward Victory speech by Glendale School First Lady Donnie Hendrix, and the morning continued to get better with a team Castor, lead by Paul vs team Leda, lead by Mrs. S. fan feud, which was legally nothing like family feud. Team Castor took it in two rounds, but Team Leda was able to get on the board by correctly guessing the top five foods that Helena has eaten on the show. In between the action on stage we were treated to Alison's epic 90's playlist, which brought me back to middle school. The DJ – his name escapes me at the moment – also had some pretty cool remixes cutting together lines from the show.

Probably the highlight was when Donnie twerked it with the winner of the Alison cosplay contest, which was Helena dressed as Alison, then eventually all of the clones joined the dance party.

Sadly, Tatiana missed the event, after the panel the night before she caught a helicopter to catch a flight. She did record a lovely little greeting for the fans, and the last 15 minutes brought every one on stage and a ton of pink and white confetti. Starting with the creators John and Graeme, then Dylan Bruce (Paul), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Mrs. S), Kristian Bruun (Donnie), Ari Millen (Castor Boys) and Jordan Gavais (Felix) for a quick Q&A. Some of the questions where repeats of the day before, like Maria Doyle Kennedy's musical skill – I finally put together that I actually have been listening to this woman for years. Other questions included the baby ox line, the name and a bit of the origins of Pupok, if Paul would return – only as Robocop was the response.

I had an awesome time, I even managed to bring home an elect Alison Hendrix shirt, thanks in some small part to my height and years of playing basketball. Others brought home those cutout of the characters. I wish I had thought of that, though, getting it on the plane might have been a headache.

I'm excited to see what this series will bring next year. They keep setting the bar higher and higher.
