Paramount Network To Bring Image Comics Spy Series 'Velvet' To TV

With an opening on its inaugural programming schedule due to the cancellation of The Mist after one season, the Paramount Network (formerly Spike TV) is looking to Image Comics spy series Velvet as their very first original scripted drama.

Kyle Killen (Awake, Lone Star) has been tapped to adapt the 15-issue comic book series, from the creative team of writer Ed Brubaker, artist Steve Epting, and colorist Elizabeth Breitweiser.

Velvet introduces readers to Velvet Templeton, a retired Cold War-era spy who gets back into the game when the opportunity to settle an old score arises. Published from 2013-2016 and recently collected as a single volume hardcover, here's Image comics' overview of the series:

As part of his overall deal with Paramount Network, Killen will pen the script for the pilot and also serve as series executive producer. Anonymous Consent's Keith Redmon and Steve Golin will also executive produce, along with Scott Pennington of Killen's Chapter Eleven and Brubaker; with Epting serving as a producer.

Paramount Network President Kevin Kay believes the series could really resonate with today's viewers:

"It's in the world of Wonder Woman and cast right and with the right pedigree? It's a big idea and we think Kyle is great."

Spike TV will be rebranded the Paramount Network on January 18th, 2018, as an effort to expand and diversify the network's viewing audience. Velvet and First Wives Club are the two most recently announced series, joining previously announced Heathers, American Woman, and Yellowstone.
