Rolling Around In New York Comic Con's Best Exclusives Of 2017

NYCC exhibitors really stepped up their exclusives game this year. The variety and uniqueness of coveted items seemed to have exploded from last year's show. NYCC had the prescience to know that some items from brands like Funko and Lego would be so coveted that a lottery was held to avoid chaos. Lessons were learned from 2016 to 2017. Toy Tokyo exclusives were now sold through the Funko booth as an additional method to stop the swag madness before it started. There was such a wide array of products this year from so many brands. This article will showcase some of the highlights.

Funko James Gunn Pop Vinyl

Funko exclusives continue to solicit the greatest demand at the show. If you were lucky enough to win the lottery with a good time slot, you stood a chance of getting some great pieces. Some that didn't win a spot or wanted extra pieces, swarmed the booth from show opening to closing. The brand does a great job of having a wide variety of licensed products, so there was something for everyone. The figure everyone was yearning for was the James Gunn Pop Vinyl figure. Only 500 were made and a limited amount Guardians of the Galaxy director of the were sold each day. Prices for this Pop currently range from $350 to $750 on Ebay. This figure was a shared exclusive on the Funko Shop website. When the figure was posted, it sold out in a matter of second. Congratulations should be given for anyone that was able to snag one.

Funko Cuphead 2 Pack Vinyl

Funko also took NYCC as an opportunity to launch their new line of vinyl figures based on the Cuphead video game by >StudioMDHR Entertainment>. This pair of vintage styled fighters was limited to a batch of 2,500 and sold out daily. The design of the figures and the graphic design of the packaging is outstanding.

Funko Lockjaw 12" Plush

The favorite pet of the Inhumans royal family had a fantastic plush made by Funko and sold exclusively by Toys R Us. This high quality plush brought a smile to many faces of all ages.

Mezco One:12 Collective Wolverine

Mezco came with a variety of figures 1/12 scale figures. Classic Red Skull and Wolverine figures were in great demand and sold out in the afternoon of the first day of the show. The booth had a showcase of figures to come. It's hoped that production will increase to meet demand so fans of these high quality figures are not disappointed.

Valiant x Build-A-Bear Bloodshot Plush and Comic

A few brands collaborated with unconventional manufacturers. Valiant collaborated with Build-A-Bear to create a Bloodshot teddy bear that was paired with an exclusive variant comic. This fuzzy guy was limited to 250 and retailed for $40.

Marvel Jessica Jones Poster

Marvel had some great promotional giveaways at their booth. The Jessica Jones Season 2 poster by Joe Quesada is a beautiful piece of artwork that helped create some anticipation for the 2nd series airing on Netflix in 2018. The posters were plentiful and many was able to take one home.

Marvel Conest of Champions Minimates

The Conest of Champions annex of the Marvel booth that was exhibiting the fighting game had a great premium. Complimentary Minimates of Guillotine and Civil Warrior, characters created for the app, made by Diamond Select Toys were given out daily.

BOOM! Studios Rugrats #1 NYCC Virgin Variant

There were many exclusive variants being sold on the show floor. The Rugrats #1 virgin variant by artist Malachi Ward did an amazing job of capturing the spirit of the convention, the nostalgia of the Nickelodeon cartoon, and New York City.

Lego Star Wars Brickheadz

Lego was another brand that had a lottery for scheduled time slots to purchase an item limited to the con. The Brickheadz construction kit two packs of Boba Fett and Han Solo in carbonite added some life to this previously lacklustre Brickheadz line. There didn't seem to be too many complaints that mini-figures weren't handed out this year. The set retailed for $40 and now sells for approximately $100 on the secondary market.

ThreeA Snow Strike Black Widow Sixth Scale Figure Variant

ThreeA set up shop at the IDW booth this year, so this lovely lass may have been overlooked. The 13" figure was designed by Ashley Wood and created for NYCC. This figure is an artist's interpretation and definitely captured the spirit of the Black Widow. The clam shell packaging will make this highly articulated difficult to display out of box.

Kotibukiya Spider-Man Artfx Special Edition Statue

Kotibukiya is another brand that understood the spirit of New York City. An exclusive winter-themed Spider-Man statue was their big exclusive for NYCC. Peter Parker is a native New Yorker and this statue displayed the essence of the city. The 1/10 scale statue is highly detailed and comes with some interchangeable accessories.

Tokidoki Black Panther Snapback New Era Snapback Hat

Tokidoki is a wonderfully curated and stylized brand. They have so many unique creations that are delightful and cute. The Black Panther hat merged the spirit of the brand and comics.

Cloak & Dagger Bodega Swag

Freeform set up shop outside of the Javits Center to market their upcoming tv shows. Their marketing team created a "bodega" for Cloak & Dagger where visitors would draw a tarot card and win a prize based on the card drawn and everyone left a winner. I hope the show is as brilliant as this marketing strategy. I made sure to make the stand my last stop each day of the con.

Topps/Santa Cruz Skateboards Blind Bag Skateboard Decks

Topps had more than trading cards as exclusives this year. Skateboard decks created with Santa Cruz Skateboards emblazoned with Garbage Pail Kids seminal Adam Bomb designs were sold in blind bags at the Topps booth. Each blind bag deck came with a chance to score a rare variant. Lucky skaters may have gone home with a board that had one of a kind artwork. They were packaged in opaque pink bags and their patrons stood out in the vast crowd.

There was something for everyone at NYCC 2017. I hope the 2018 show continues to propel itself forward with the same momentum.
