50 Years Of Fandom: How Comic Took Over The World! Panel
Jemal Flores writes for Bleeding Cool:
A long time ago in New York City, back in the 1960's there was no such thing as a comic book convention. Believe it or not, there were no Cosplayers or blockbuster movies. All that would change in 1964. Here at New York Comic Con 2014, Michael Uslan, David Uslan, Lee Kohse, and Rob Salkowitz shed some light and recounted their first comic convention experiences.
Back when Michael Uslan was 13 their world looked down on people who read comic books.
The comic and super hero fans led a life of isolation. There was no such thing as an internet back then.
Michael and his brothers had to rely on 10 to 25 cent Fanzines, with a circulation of about 100 people. They met other like mined people. One person in particular was a Friend from Bayonne, New Jersey by the name of George R.R. Martin.
At the first comic convention fans would gather to meet up and trade comics with each other. Wear costumes for the 1st time ever, hang out with others who shared their hobby. The 1st Con had only 200 attendees. There the Uslan Brothers met comics legends Otto Binder and Bill Finger. The Con was a place to actually see the creators face to face.
Now in the year 2014, the conventions have exploded to include 1000's of people, billion dollar movie and game franchises. comic book characters are everywhere. comics culture has taken over the world in T.V. , video games and the internet. The fandom has taken over the world from Japan, Europe, Korea and China. Comic book culture is now the whole worlds culture.
