Humanoids Releases a Comics Bundle Through Groupees
On Tuesday, May 5th, Humanoids released a comics bundle through Groupees to benefit The Hero Initiative. Like with most bundles, the tiered system is weighted towards the highest tier ($15), which is where you can find Barbarella and The Eyes Of The Cat. Humanoids and Groupees are also adding volumes of Legend Of The Scarlet Blades to all orders once they reach a $1,500 threshold.
Realistically though, it's an embarrassment of riches for $15. Here's a couple of my favorites from each of the three tiers:
At $2, there's the first two volumes of Miss: Better Living Through Crime, a fantastic crime series set during the Roaring Twenties that Ed Brubaker blurbed about thirty seconds before he started Criminal with Sean Phillips. There's also the first third of I Am Legion, a Nazi magic story that John Cassaday drew. For that money, you also get what I imagine is the first half of the issues that comprise the 2000's era revival of Metal Hurlant. (I wrote about Humanoids reprinting several of stories from that revival here.)
At $8, we start cooking with gas. Here Humanoids offers the first three of the six albums that make up The Incal and the first four of eight albums that make up The Metabarons. At that level, Groupees and Humanoids also round out Miss: Better Living Through Crime, as well as the final two albums of I Am Legion.
At $15, you receive the other half of The Incal and The Metabarons, which on its own, is a steal. Those comics are iconic and challenging to overpraise. At its most reductive, The Incal is inarguably the best science fiction comic to come out of Europe ever. (I'm sure that won't ignite an argument in the comment section.) If you do nothing else with your quarantine, try reading The Metabarons. The Metabarons is a hysteric, mad space opera to quote Warren Ellis loosely. And ugh, that doesn't even count Pandora's Eyes, Barbarella, or The Eyes Of The Cat. (What I think is Moebius and Alejandro Jodorowsky's first collaboration.) Or Gullivera!
