Lizard On A Stick, Anyone? A Review Of Limbo #1

unnamed3

I have some mixed feelings about Image's new series Limbo, written by Dan Watters, with art by Caspar Wijngaard. The story follows a detective with no memory, identity, or manners, a femme fatale seeking escape from a powerful crime lord, a voodoo queen with a penchant for mixtapes and hi-tops, and a goat-eating TV. The location is a place called Dedande City, which houses an eclectic cast of characters.

I will say I was amused by the opening lines, "Lizard on a stick. This bar does the best damn lizard on a stick in Dedande City." They definitely set the tone for the issue…and I'm going to describe that tone as a bit random. However, before you take that as a negative point, I feel like it's kind of the point. While the premise of a detective investigating a crime lord of sorts seems common, the randomness of it all makes everything more interesting.

I think that Watters gives us a good first issue with a sprinkling of new/complex characters while setting up a plot that could prove to be pretty interesting in the future. What's happened thus far feels like the building blocks of something that could be great. With that said, Caspar Wijngaard's art style brings the comic to a higher level. Besides the classic character design, it has a retro vibe that's pretty cool. My favorite part of the first issue had to be the bit about the goat-eating TV…hilariously terrifying!

So, there you have it! Grab a copy of Limbo #1 to see the randomness for yourself!
