All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #11 Review: The Return Of Nova

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #11 Review: The Return Of Nova

Richard Rider, AKA Nova the Human Rocket, has found evidence that his brother, Robbie, may still be alive. Robbie returned to Xandar, the former homeworld of the Nova Corps. Richard follows him there, and we see what happened to Robbie during and after the events of the Cancerverse Incursion from The Thanos Imperative.

It was always great seeing Brian Michael Bendis expand on Abnett and Lanning plot points from their time on Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova from years back, so it's nice seeing Gerry Duggan do the same here with a Nova-themed issue of All-New Guardians of the Galaxy.

What happened to the rest of the Nova Corps members from Richard's brief reconstruction of the Corps has been one of many plot threads left loose in the shadow of The Thanos Imperative and Abnett and Lanning's departure from Marvel's cosmic stable of titles.

Without spoiling much, Robbie's story turns quite brutal. He is found by enemies of the Nova Corps, and they try to turn him on their perceived enemies, including the Nova Corps.

It's a pretty heavy comic.

Richard Rider is such a great character, and I was disappointed with his presence in the last Nova title which he shared with Sam Alexander. It's nice seeing him get some spotlight again here, and I hope he pops up in this title more.

Roland Boschi's artwork is quite stunning and atmospheric. It paints the galaxy as gritty and harsh, which is something you don't often see from cosmic titles from the Big Two. It's a bit reminiscent of Steve Epting and Mike Perkins  two great artists to be compared to. Daniel Brown's color work similarly evokes a harsh atmosphere with darkened and faded colors splashed across the page.

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #11 surprises with its grittiness and unflinching narrative. It fills in some story gaps from years back while focusing on one of the more underappreciated Marvel heroes. I highly recommend this one; give it a read.
