Epic Games Has Filed Copyright Lawsuits Against Fortnite Cheaters
Epic Games' incredibly popular Fortnite: Battle Royale has one major problem whittling away at the game's success. Cheaters quickly become a major problem in matches and Epic has taken a number of steps to counteract cheating, but they've recently stepped up their anti-cheat game by filing new lawsuits against two repeat cheaters.
According to documents obtained by TorrentFreak, Epic launched lawsuits against two alleged cheaters known as Mr. Broom and Mr. Vraspir. Both have been caught cheating multiple times and have been banned from the game, yet they continue to make new accounts to keep playing. Epic's lawsuit points out that cheating, and enabling others to cheat, is in violation of the terms and agreements players must agree to before accessing the game. Which means that both Broom and Vraspir were knowingly violating those terms over and over both by creating and utilizing custom exploits.
Both of the accused work for cheat provider AddictedCheats, and target popular streamers to gain notoriety. Because going after streamers guarantees them an audience, and also has the added benefit of frustrating the hell out of the streamers in question.
Vraspir is accused of having written the cheat code in question, and Broom has previously cliamed that he is working on a cheat designed to create "unwanted chaos and disorder." Both defendants are facing up to $150,000 in damages for copyright infringement.
In a statement given to IGN, an Epic spokesperson said: "When cheaters use aimbots or other cheat technology, they ruin games for people who are playing fairly. We take cheating seriously, and we'll pursue all available options to make sure our games are fun, fair, and competitive for players." Epic has previously stated that taking down cheaters is its "highest priority," and the company has indeed banned thousands of cheaters already.
