Not Even Nintendo Knew About The Gamecube Controller Support On The Switch
Nintendo's latest update to the Nintendo Switch which enabled GameCube controller support appears to have been a simple accident, rather than a clue to anything more. Nintendo wants to assure us that it was not intentional.
Because the recent 4.0.0 update enabled the Wii U GameCube adapter and full controller support, some believed that a GameCube Virtual console library or new Smash Bros. announcement could be on the way.
Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime explained:
"In our latest system software update, it enables third-party peripherals to work on Nintendo Switch. There's no direct use for the controllers, but if you fancy playing games without the ZL button and getting your retro fix in, it's as easy as plugging the controller into the adaptor, and telling the Switch to pair with it. Because, let's be honest, the GameCube controllers were the best controllers Nintendo has ever made (outside of the Switch pro controllers), so obviously you're willing to give up the ZL button.
After all, who needs the ZL button? Little baby Nintendo wimps. Back in my day, we had three prongs and no idea where to put our hands…
