Rise Of The Tomb Raider Was Gorgeous Already And Now Its Even Better
I don't usually get too hyped up by 4K visual enhancements for games, because while I love looking at games on my 4K screen, I'm also happy to shelve looks in favor of good gameplay. But I was absolutely blown away by how awesome Rise of the Tomb Raider will look in 4K once the game gets its Xbox One X update in November.
The game was being demoed at the Square Enix NYCC Suite Spot, and the demo was one of the early tombs in the game. What immediately struck me was the fact that the tomb being demoed for the 4K update was the very first tomb I ever demoed in Rise of the Tomb Raider at that exact NYCC event two years ago. And while I have fond memories of that demo, and of the full game, I just sat there staring at the dynamic lighting updates, Lara's constant cinematic hair, and just how good the small details look in 4K. All of Lara's cuts and scrapes are rendered beautifully and look almost frighteningly realistic.
All of the details were there in the original game, but with the 4K updates, they stand out a hell of a lot more than they used to.
The 4K visuals were developed by Crystal Dynamics in partnership with Nixxes Software to include premiere graphics and other technical enhancements that leverage the full power of Xbox One X with settings that gamers can tailor to their taste.
Xbox One X players can choose from one of three visual modes for the game once the update goes live, including:
- Native 4K: (full 3840 by 2160) for highest fidelity resolution
- Enriched Visuals for stunning graphic upgrades
- High Frame Rate for the smoothest possible gameplay
New Xbox One X tech enhancements for Rise of the Tomb Raider include:
- HDR display support for more vibrant and accurate color representation technology
- Spatial audio support, including Dolby Atmos®, for true 3D audio
- Enhanced texture resolution for Lara Croft®, NPCs, and environments, leveraging additional memory offered by the Xbox One X
- Improved anti-aliasing for immersive realistic details
Additional visual enhancements include:
- Improved volumetric lights
- Improved reflections
- Enhanced foliage
- Upgraded polygonal detail
- Amplified texture filtering
But if you'd rather see the enhancements in action, you can check them out in the Xbox One X Enhancement trailer below.
