Shiny Gastly Haunts Pokémon GO On Gastly Community Day This Sunday

Pokémon GO trainers voted, and Niantic listened. Back in May, the mobile game developer announced that the next two Community Days would be decided by poll. Players of the game took to Twitter to vote on their choice of what would be the highlighted spawn for both the June and July events, which led to the bug/poison-type Pokémon Weedle and the ghost/poison-type Gastly winning. Weedle got its day in June, with Gastly Community Day coming this Sunday, July 19th. Here's what Pokémon GO trainers can expect from the event, how they can maximize the rewards, and how they can guarantee an encounter with Shiny Gastly.

Gastly spawns… everywhere

Everyone who has played a Pokémon GO Community Day before knows that there will be no shortage of spawns. Gastly will dominate the game from 11AM to 5PM local time. The best locations to guarantee increased Pokémon spawns are generally central areas in towns with dense Pokéstops and gyms, as well as large parking lots that have large clusters of spawns. However, Niantic has made all of its recent events playable from home, and Gastly Community Day is no exception. If players put on an incense, they will receive three hours of Gastly spawns, with at least one spawn guaranteed per minute. With the increased shiny rate that Community Day Pokémon enjoy, playing for the full event will essentially guarantee trainers will be able to catch more than one Shiny Gastly.

Gastly will also appear in a limited amount of photobomb encounters.

Gastly Community Day bonuses

In addition to increased Gastly spawns, here are the planned bonuses that Niantic is rolling out, paired with a tip to help trainers maximize on each one.

There'll be a special one-time-purchase July Community Day Box, featuring 30 Ultra Balls, an Elite Fast TM, two Incense, and two Super Incubators.

Outside of GO Battle League, Pokémon GO's player-vs-player feature, Community Day boxes are the only ways to obtain Elite Fast TMs. These devices allow trainers to unlock legacy moves on Pokémon, but the boxes are notoriously expensive. The best bet would be to make sure there is a Pokémon you have in mind before purchasing this box, which otherwise is filled with items that are either cheap or easy to come by.

For US$1 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency), you'll be able to access the Community Day–exclusive Special Research story: The Great Gastly! Follow Professor Willow as he investigates some spooky happenings in his mobile lab!

This, on the other hand, is affordable and highly recommended. In past Community Days, these Special Research stories have led to encounters with the Spotlight Pokémon. What makes these encounters special is that while Pokémon in the wild have totally random stats, Pokémon encountered have a limit to how low the Pokémon's IVs (their stats) can be. If you're looking for a powerful Gastly to evolve into Gengar, this will be a dollar well spent. It's a great way to get a higher IV Shiny Gastly than one can hope to encounter in the wild.

Eggs will require 1/4 Hatch Distance when placed in Incubators during the event period. Please note that this bonus will not stack with other active Hatch Distance bonuses.

My advice? If you're going out to hatch an egg, wear a mask.

Incense activated during the event will last for three hours.

Now that incense is stackable, meaning that trainers can activate more than one at once, this is a great feature to take advantage of. Since incenses normally last one hour, activating multiple during this window will get trainers quite the bang for their buck.

Gengar's special move, Shadow Punch

Evolve Gastly into Haunter, and Haunter into Gengar during Gastly Community Day or up to two hours after, and that Gengar will receive the exclusive attack Shadow Punch. Community Day moves are highly coveted, so the final tip is this: you're going to be able to encounter hundreds if not thousands of Gastly during the event, so why not evolve a few up? They will make terrific trading fodder, and the move makes Gengar viable in GO Battle League.
